The Residents: The River of Crime, an online community art project and Re-Viewed

The Residents: The River of Crime,
an online community art project
Submissions requested August 15–September 15
http://www.moma.org/residents

The Residents: Re-Viewed
October 19–23

The Museum of Modern Art
11 W. 53 St. (212) 708-9480
http://www.moma.org/film
You are invited to take part in an online project with The Museum of Modern Art and The Residents. The famously anonymous multimedia visual artists and musicians seek video to go with their audio.

Between August 15 and September 15, visit http://www.residents.com to download the audio excerpt from The River of Crime episode 1 and read the directions for submitting your clip.

The Residents and MoMA curator Barbara London will judge submissions. On October 1, thirty shortlist videos will be posted on YouTube.com.

London and the Residents will select the final videos for screening at MoMA on October 19. YouTube popularity will be taken into consideration in the judging process. On October 20, the selections will be posted on http://www.moma.org/residents

The Residents: Re-Viewed
October 19–23

This survey features the musical videos and films of The Residents. Originally from Louisiana, they moved to San Francisco in the early 1970s and formed Ralph Records. With wit and rarified electronic inventiveness, The Residents fuse a dark storytelling tradition of the South with an eccentric countercultural spirit of the Bay Area. The exhibition includes material such as Eskimo (1979), the bizarre 2002 Demons Dance Alone show, and footage from their ambitious Vileness Fats film project, which was reluctantly cancelled after four years (1972–76) of filming.

Throughout their thirty-year history, The Residents have cloaked their lives and music in obscurity. Band members (always four in number) refuse to grant interviews, do not identify themselves by name (or even individual pseudonyms), and never appear without masks (usually giant eyeballs with top hats.) Their management team, The Cryptic Corporation, coordinates their productions and tours.

A representative will introduce the opening program and discuss The River of Crime, their recently released downloadable "Crimecast" series modeled after radio dramas of the 1940s.

The Museum of Modern Art
11 W. 53 St. (212) 708-9480
http://www.moma.org/film

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE, YOU MUST REVIEW AND AGREE TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS GOVERNING SUBMISSION TO YOUTUBE, WHICH MAY BE LOCATED AT http://www.youtube.com/t/terms, AND THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS GOVERNING SUBMISSION TO MoMA, WHICH MAY BE LOCATED AT http://www.moma/residents, EACH OF WHICH ARE INCORPORATED HEREIN BY REFERENCE. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ANY OF THESE TERMS, THEN PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT MATERIALS FOR THIS PROJECT.

Thoughts on Animal Lovers?

Simple curiosity and respect for past love got me to by the new Animal Lover CD.

After the last few albums, I was ready to forget about the Residents. Fearing future thoughts of "How far they fell".

I cannot say the new album is enough to heal the wounds from Deamons, but its a step in the right direction; many of the song's melodies slide around my skull.

I await the next release to decide if this was a one last gasp or the beginning of a new foundation.

Have the dead men really gotten out of way?

WIN RESIDENTS VINYL, SHIRTS AND THINGS from ORGAN ZINE

WIN RESIDENTS VINYL, SHIRTS AND THINGS............

That's right we got double vinyl versions of the new Residents album ANIMAL LOVER as well as giant eyeball shirt and sets of artcards

Go to http://www.organart.com to win win win........

Here's the ORGAN album review

THE RESIDENTS - Animal Lover (Mute) - So, just when you think that things cannot be any stranger, that your ears may have just encountered their weirdest piece of music yet, 'Animal Lover' elevates to a further level of strangeness. Dark, jewelled, woozy songs; rich, unnerving, addictive (under)sea shanties, skewed from normal scales by a few degrees, as if received from one of those other dimension Mr Hawkings goes on about. The Residents are, of course, The Residents: you've either heard them before, at some point in their long career, or you won't have a chance of imagining what they do. They are extraordinary. It is hard to listen to this album for any length of time without feeling slightly changed by it. I just wish that I was more familiar with their long career to be able to put 'Animal Lover' in context with what The Residents have composed in recent years (though I have been treated to selected earlier recordings by fanatical friends, the tip of an iceberg of creativity). At the risk of some Residents aficionado shaking their head and going 'oo, but they're not as good as they were back in etc'... this album sounds to me like an absolute classic - and an accessible one. These fifteen songs and instrumentals are modulated by that utterly unique Residents hypnotic, slurred beauty, possessing depth and subtlety, unexpected and unheard-of sounds. I had porcupine quill-sized goosebumps from start to finish. In common with many of their releases, 'Animal Lover' is a concept album, this time dealing with the differences between humans and animals (from the point of view of the animals). There is also a coherent melodic theme running through the album that is reminiscent of gamelan compositions: sometimes ominous, always beautiful even when twisted into a tense shape, these pure, archetypal tunes could have started as a fragment of sound slowed down to individual notes. The gamelan itself (or something sounding like it) is used to mesmeric effect on, for instance, the hair-raising atmospherics of 'Monkey Man' and 'Whispering Boys'; elsewhere, Arvo Part comes to mind in places; The Sea Nymphs/Spratley's Japs in particular during the glorious female harmonies throughout and the extraordinary vocals of 'What Have My Chickens Done Now'. With atmospheres ranging from cheerily catchy, menacing grooves to the disturbing dronescapes of 'Burn My Bones', 'Animal Lover' is immediately absorbing and involving, maybe even a goodfirst step into The Residents' extensive and very very strange world. Beware - those tunes invade your head... you will change...

What's your most beloved Resident's song, section of a song, or unknown tone?

You know the feeling, your really getting into a song then the Residents show you someting very special.

I think their Gerswin stuff is great for this feeling of amazment. They really had to work hard to get it right, and they show their effort.

Boneless Boy is damn intense with its good writing and vocals.

The birth section on Eskimo is great noise. They mother's screams sound so true and real. Then, the baby begins to cry. And you could see/feel the innocense in the baby's cry. Amazing noise.

And their pure evil section is on "God in Three Parts". when he makes certain the door is quite when it shuts.

Do you get strange looks from people, when they discover you listen to The Residents?

I do not get this in San Francisco. But in other cities, it has been a powerful conversion stopper.

Anyone else witness this before?

I'm interested in doing an all-acoustic project consisting
of covers of tunes from the Commercial Albumn.

This is VERY feasable. Think about it.

Any SF area people interested?

1. Disfigured Night
2. Demons Dance Alone

If had had the extra cash I'd buy them all, but....for now I'd at least be intersted to hear opinions on them....I haven't heard/seen any of them yet.

Is anyone else as obsessed with this as I am? That Timmy sure is a cute kid. And poor Lottie! I am always hoping that everyone will live happily ever, but we all know that's not possible on the midway. I especially like reading daddy's poetry while toking on a nice big hand-rolled smoke.

1977 Radio Special

I was trying to get a copy of the Penn Jillette special, but got the wrong tape by accident. But since I had this other show on hand, I decided to digitize it. And then I went the extra mile and re-mastered it, replacing almost all of the songs with clean versions ripped from CDs.

This show is from 1977 and features a lot of material from Babyfingers, and some rarities that are now found on Residue Deux. There is a fair amount of interview dialog with the actual Rez speaking under assumed names.

Also, I did take one small liberty. The original tape had a shortened version of Walter Westinghouse. The MP3 file I made has the full length version.

Find it here:
